Our Team and Expertise
The Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) was created in 1998 out of a proud and confident vision of uniting an exceptional team of researchers in New Brunswick and becoming a leader in “research for life”, to generate knowledge that will help improve Canadians’ health.
Those who launched the Institute wanted to set up a flexible, adapted model of an institute that has its roots in the region and its eyes on the world, which would be at the cutting edge of knowledge, contribute to scientific progress and produce national and international relevant research, notably in the fight against cancer.
- ACRI has formed the only team of its kind in New Brunswick – a multidisciplinary team of 30 people, including a core of researchers, research associates and assistants, post-doctoral students and graduates, and other collaborators.
- The Institute has the latest technological infrastructure, and is the largest cancer research centre in the Atlantic region.
- Located in modernized facilities of the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Regional Hospital, the Institute enjoys full autonomy while benefiting from local synergy and the advantages due in part to the physical proximity of the two organizations.
- ACRI is lead by Dr. Rodney Ouellette, founding scientific director, doctor of medicine and Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology.
- The expertise shared by members of the team is central to our modern concerns and practices, ranging from genomics, gene therapy and biotechnology to their applications in oncology – all fields in which the Institute works and for which it is seeking to expand its research capacities.
- For the year 2005-2006, the Institute had total revenues of more than $3M.

| The Board of Directors is made up of a dozen individuals. They bring together a wide range of experiences and expertise and offer the points of view of a variety of circles: university, government, financial, organizational, legal, entrepreneurial, political, etc. For the Institute, the Board members’ input is vital. They are its “antennae”, and help weave its network of partners and friends. |

two discoveries in the process of being marketed
The ACRI, in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, filed two patents for molecular methods for diagnosing prostate and colon cancer. The Institute is pursuing marketing opportunities and is already looking at ways to apply the process to other types of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancer, and cancers of the lymphatic system.
LAUNCH OF THE ATLANTIC MICROARRAY FACILITY (AMF): a unique and invaluable regional resource
The AMC provides high-quality DNA microchip products and services to academic and government researchers from the region and elsewhere. These lucrative secondary research activities and the availability of this expertise are adding to the culture of innovation and promoting ongoing investments.
