This is a pivotal time in the evolution of cancer research. Working together, we can all make a difference in eradicating this disease.
Since it was established in 1998, the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute has been an active participant in the global medical research effort.
The Institute is a pioneer in a field not traditionally associated with our region. It has become a true centre of excellence in Atlantic Canada and a key player in the biomedical field, here and well beyond our borders.
Your donation will make a difference in finding new and innovative treatments and cures for this terrible disease.
When you support ACRI researchers, you also support the patients who benefit from the unique expertise of this centre of excellence.

6 good reasons to support the Discoveries Campaign

1 To take part in the fight of the century

The Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) is on the front line of one of the most important battles of the century: the scientific fight against cancer.

  • The number of new cancer cases will increase by approximately 60% over the next 20 years due to population growth and aging.
  • Cancer is the principal cause of premature death in Canada.
  • In Canada, 38% of women and 44% of men will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in their lives.
  • Approximately two out of five Canadians are likely to develop cancer, and approximately one out of four will die of it.

2 To support the institute’s leadership and excellence

The Institute has illustrated its leadership and its excellence through its successful achievements in cancer research.

3 To create synergy and favorable conditions for research

The Institute is a unique environment for convergence, collaboration and partnership between numerous local, regional, provincial and indeed national bodies dedicated to the health of the population and to ongoing acquisition of new knowledge and insights in the field of cancer research...which leads to very positive impacts on health care and the education systems.

4 To consolidate and expand our regional capacity to conduct scientific research

The Institute helps place an infrastructure and the latest equipment at the disposal of Atlantic researchers. By its very existence, the Institute consolidates and expands our regional capacity For scientific research. In addition, it provides the region with a high-caliber research body that is eligible for national research grants. Not that long ago, the Atlantic region obtained only a meager 3% of the total funds allotted to health research, for a population representing 8% of the total Canadian population.

5 To create jobs and generate lucrative activities

The socio-economic spin-offs of the Institute are manifold, and they are tangible: the Institute keeps scientific “talents” in the region and helps stop the “brain-drain”. It creates high-caliber jobs, generates lucrative secondary research activities and commercializes expertise and services (such as micro-chips), helps develop a culture of innovation and favors recurrent investments, etc.

6 To mobilize to create long-lasting achievements

Above all, the Institute makes it possible, through its philanthropic message, to mobilize members of the community who are concerned with public health and the population’s wellness. This is of enormous benefit to Canadian society, and herein contributes to the continuity and sustainability of cancer research in our community. Most major endeavors in our community have been built by generous volunteer teams. The scientific fight against cancer led by the Institute relies on committed volunteer members of society – the kind of pillars of society who generate and develop enduring initiatives, generation after generation...
